How To Find Smart People to Follow On Twitter

How To Find Smart People to Follow On Twitter What if you could find smart people to follow on Twitter? Consider it another way to learn, stay current, and meet new people? Finding smart people to follow on Twitter does take some time on your part.   But so does networking. Can you just allocate 10 minutes a day to build your network on Twitter? How To Find Smart People To Follow On Twitter I have used a two-step process to follow people, which makes it easier to view tweets. Step One: follow Step Two: add to list I follow the person and then add them to a list (kind of like giving them a tag or category). To learn more about creating lists, here is a link to Twitters official instructions. As you think about why you are using Twitter, your lists might become more clear.   Here are some list   ideas: Target Companies Thought leaders Industry happenings Local News Job postings Personal Or, sometimes their profile info will give you a clue about what list to add them to.  In some cases, I wasnt sure where to list the people I followed.   So I didnt add them to a list.   Thats ok too. To give you an idea of what Im talking about, these are some of the lists Ive created based on MY personal goals and objectives: Career Experts Recruiters HR Pros Great Thinkers Social Media Personal Branding If any of these lists sounds interesting, you can follow my list (by clicking on the list and selecting follow) and reap the benefit of my list-building without needing to find and follow your own. 10 Ways to Begin Finding People to Follow on Twitter When you read a good blog or website, find their Twitter handle and follow that person or company (almost everyone has a Twitter icon on their site!) Assess what industries are of interest to you and your future so you have a focus. Find Top 10 lists and follow them (For example, there was just a post listing the Top X in Marketing, so clicked through each site and followed the people and companies) Follow followers (At your discretion) Use #FF (which stands for Follow Friday) and follow people who have been recommended Use Twitters Who to follow When you find someone to follow, see who they are following or what lists they have created and follow those that make sense Use LinkedIns feature to see who in your LinkedIn network is using Twitter # (whatever is of interest).   A hashtag is a way of sorting/filtering.   For example, search using the #job and you can find all the Tweets that contain the hashtag and the word job. Watch or join in on Twitter Chats focused on your industry.   (Here is an ongoing list of Twitter Chats and their information) and follow some of the cool people participating in the chat. If you wanted to find the SMARTEST PEOPLE TO FOLLOW, here are the people I would recommend.   They are using Twitter to communicate in different ways, are the best of the best at what they do, and I enjoy and look forward to seeing their tweets! List of Job Search Professionals To Follow Click here to see the 2019 list. Ill have to confess, creating this list was difficult.   I know I havent included everyone.   Ive tried to select a cross section of people.   Undoubtedly, I have omitted some key folks.   I surely AM following them, they just didnt make the list!   Please, no hurt feelings! I also wrote a post about how to use Tweetdeck to get the most from your Twitter experience.   1 Hour a Day Marketing Strategies for Jobseekers I love this tool and have made some great friends through Twitter!

The Important Questions Series

The Important Questions Series Browsing through Etsy this week, I came across a common interview question as illustrated by AbleandBaker. Then I found another. And another. And I thought, What a great way to take those stressful interview questions and use em for good as art! And I just couldnt not post em here. Arent they amazeballs? top to bottom: Biggest Strength; What Would Your Coworkers Say; Why Exactly Should I Hire You; What Really Interests You; Five Years, all by AbleandBaker. According to the product description, this series came via being   ()forced to enter the sometimes formidable, often confounding and always esteem-crushing world of the job hunt. Graveling for work is not easy or fun, but it did give me a chance to observe, repeatedly, my interviewer struggle just as much as myself. Much to my complete amazement, all the stereotypical interview questions â€" the ones you’ve heard in every movie and sitcom for your entire life â€" are, well… still in heavy rotation. Is there something in your life thats stressful or seems just a bit ridiculous? How can you use it as creative fuel?

Career Information for a Bilingual Clinic Assistant - Work It Daily

Career Information for a Bilingual Clinic Assistant - Work It Daily The following interview outlines what it takes to get a job as a Bilingual Clinic Assistant and what to expect throughout a health care career. This is a true career story as told to LatPro and is one of many interviews with individuals in the healthcare profession, including a Drug Abuse Counselor, Psychotherapist, and many more. I work as a Bilingual Clinic Assistant in the public health sector of my county. I have been in this position for approximately three years. I would say my job requires three very strong qualities: patience, persistence and endurance. As a Latina woman working as an interpreter, it becomes a struggle between doctor and patient. A patient will often treat me as if I were the doctor, while the doctor is at times doubtful of my translation. Part of it is probably being a woman in a supporting role to powerful men, while also being part of the minority groups that they need me to translate for in the first place. I do far more than just translate, although that is where I get the most recognition. My responsibilities shift and change constantly, depending on the need for translation on a particular day. It can be quite frustrating to come to a different job almost every day. The translation is the only thing that remains constant. My job is very satisfying on one front, but frustrating on the other. Helping a patient is always a “10” on the experience scale - it is always moving to help a sick person, especially when they have no way to speak for themselves. However, being abused by co-workers and bosses who change your duties on a whim is a “2” at best. There is something very unique about this work situation that most people do not take into account. Many of the patients have diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV and require your assistance as much as the others. There is no room for any germ-phobia. I started this line of work sort of by chance. I moved into a new state and was desperately searching for a job. This was the best one to offer me any kind of a position. There is a lot of office drama involved in this environment and I learned quickly to keep my mouth shut. At first, I wanted to make friends with all of my co-workers, but the polarized groups caused friction with a few bosses. I learned my lesson quickly. The working world is very different from school in that the smartest people are usually not the ones in charge. It is about who you know and what you have done. The strangest thing I have ever experienced would have to be trying to translate an argument to a doctor. A wife had just contracted herpes from her husband, which revealed that he had obviously been cheating. It was quite the scene. There are many patients who make me happy to have come in. They are hopeless and lost when they come in, but taken care of when they leave. The only issue I take with the job is the problem of office politics. The appointment desk workers often are at odds with the health providers and create childish dramas over office supplies and medical forms. The job can be extremely stressful due to the nature of the industry. Getting something across to the doctor incorrectly can make a huge difference to whether someone is diagnosed correctly. Giving someone the news that they have a disease is no fun either. The salary is a bit low for the level of stress involved. I average about $20,000 a year. The region I work in is below poverty level, so it is actually a pretty good pay grade for the area. However I feel someone working with so much sensitive, private information should be paid a bit more. I take my vacation days whenever I earn them and it never feels like enough. Some days at work are so intense that it feels like you need a week off. I got my job with an associate’s degree and by passing a Spanish fluency test. The minimum education standard is a high school degree, but Spanish is a must. If a friend wanted my career advice on whether or not to enter this field, I would tell them it is a great job for those that are passionate about helping others. That being said, it is a very stressful job to take on. JustJobs.com is a job search engine that finds job listings from company career pages, other job boards, newspapers and associations. With one search, they help you find the job with your name on it. Bilingual clinic assistant image from Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

6 steps to turning a work buddy into a real-life friend

6 steps to turning a work buddy into a real-life friendMost people have two social groups in their lives the people you hang out with all day, every day, because you have to (coworkers) and the people you hang out with by choice when you find the free time (friends). Lots of people keep these spheres separate, so there are firm boundaries in place between work life and real life. But what happens when you meet someone at work who you just adore and want to become friends with beyond office pleasantries? googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) There are a lot of reasons its great to have a true pal and confident at work. Random just saying hi pop ins make your day go faster. You have a constant lunch or coffee break buddy. And work-wise, it can often mean a strong ally on your side. But negotiating the road to real friendship can be a tricky one. Heres how to do it.1. Be pickyfind someone you trust. You cant afford to lay it all out there for just anyone. Quality is much more important than quantity when it comes to office friendships. Shoot for one (or two) people who seem to have interests and life situations and values most in common with you.2. Dont rush the process.Dont jump right into the meaningful convos over margaritas stage, or the inviting people over for dinner with your family stage. Going from coworker to friend takes a gentle touchif things dont work out, you still need to see the person every day. abflug with a casual coffee or a lunch to test the waters. Is the conversation effortless? Do you feel comfortable, and can you tell whether your new pal-to-be feels comfortable as well?3. Go on a second date.Just because the first foray went well, make sure it wasnt just a fluke. Try aelendher lunch or casual coffee, or maybe a happy hour. If you pick up straight where you left off and it still feels breezy and fantastic to be in their company, then keep at it.4. Lead with what interests you.Dont just talk about wo rk. Start trying out conversations that have more to do with your outside life, interests, hobbies, and passions, and see how well you match up. To build a real friendship youll need to build shared memories, which is much easier to do when you have more in common than just where you go to work each day. Try not to gotoo personal too soon, thoughyou can bare your soul a few months down the line, not right after you find out whether or not someone has any siblings.5. Open up when you feel comfortable. When you feel like things are really moving along well, it might be time to let your hair down cautiously and share some more personal details. No oversharing Keep it relaxed and not too dramatic. Take your cues from your new friend, as well. Listen to what theyre talking about and try not to bulldoze through whatever boundaries they might be adhering to with big blockbuster confessions.6. Keep potential complications in mind.Having a work bestie or two can be great, but you should also be prepared for the occasional awkward situation. Say your friend gets promoted over you or starts to shoot up the ladder and youre still deckenfries at entry-level. How might you react? Try to foresee a few of these possibilities and ask yourself if youll be able to be genuinely happy for your friends success and not too competitive throughout the course of your careers. Will this friendship be strong enough to weather the ups and downs of your working world?

#MakingTime A Day in the Life of a Globetrotting Nonprofit Director

MakingTime A Day in the Life of a Globetrotting Nonprofit Director https//fairygodboss.com/career-topics/working-for-a-nonprofitWomen can do anything but leid everything. As the largest erreichbar career community for women, we atFairygodbossrealize that balance is a myth, and that picking what to prioritize on a day-to-day basis isnt always easy.In the MakingTime series, women share with us how, for one day, they chose to spend their most precious resurce time.--WhoShelleyCallahanWhatDirector of Development at Children Incorporated--600 amI wake up and get out of bed and start the coffee maker immediately before doing anything else. Either my husband or I get the coffee ready the night before so the only thing between us and a cup first thing in the a.m. is the press of a button.615 am I sit down and open my computer. I live on the West Coast and Children Incorporateds main office in on the East Coast, so it is really important to me to get my day started around the same time that my co-workers are sitting down at their desks as well.730 amI make breakfast with my husband before he goes to work. We stick to eggs and avocado as vegetarians, its light and easy to make and gives us a good protein punch in the morning so we both feel energized for the day. On this particular morning, he is taking over in the kitchen so I can finish up a few work emails.800 amMy husband leaves and I get back to the computer. My morning consists of completing a story about a recent trip to Brazil by one of our staff members for our On the Road blog series on our website, scheduling emails blasts that go out to our donors and supporters, and working on our completing content and design for our print communications. I have my cell phone and two computers in front of me at this point so I can communicate via Slack, email, our social media channels, and even get on a Skype call all at the same time. I love technology and how it allows us to multi-task it makes my job exciting 900 am Snack break. I always eat a banana mid-morning. If I forget to buy enough and we andrang out, I feel like my whole morning is thrown off. Today is thankfully not one of those days.910 amPhone call with our print materials provider, followed by a phone call with our web design gruppe, followed by a quick call with our Google Ad representative. I dont get to see many of the amazing people we work with in person because we all live in different places in the U.S., so short check-in calls every month or two are very valuable even if everything is going smoothly, getting to chat in person can sometimes bring on new, great ideas that would not have come up otherwise over strictly email communications.1000 amBreak to go on a run. There is a park two minutes away from my house where I can do a quick 25-minute loop and really clear my head while listening to music. Breaks are so crucial when you work a demanding job. Today the temperature is cool, and it is early enough in the day where the sun is not blaring down on me so I am able to keep a good pace and maintain my speed throughout. 1030 am.Admittedly, I dont shower right away after my run. I sit down again in front of the computer in my running gear and follow up on emails. By now, it is right after lunch on the East Coast, so it is time for the afternoon check- in to see what has developed in the office. I receive photos from our International Programs Director of children in the Philippines receiving free meals thanks to our International Feeding Program. I spend time editing the photos and creating content so that they can be shared on our social media platforms, as well as on our website. 1100 amThe rest of the day is dedicated to writing and more writing. Since Children Incorporated works in 23 countries, including the U.S., at 300 project sites with over 8,000 children, we have a lot of stories to tell and a lot of content to work with. I never get tired of writing stories about the work that we do and the impact that our donors have on children all over the world. Today, I am working on a story about children in Costa Rica who received mattresses last winter thanks to a fund we have set up when special needs arise in the communities we work in. Many of this childrne were sleeping on the floor before we were able to purchase mattresses for them.1230 pmI make a quick spinach salad with tomato, cannellini beans, onion, and olives. I dont like to eat a heavy lunch because I worry it will make me tired. Today, like most every day, I eat in front of my computer so my work isnt interrupted. 200 pmThe office is closed now on the East Coast, but the work day is not over for me I have a trip to Guatemala coming up in a few short weeks, so the afternoon is spent working on a video script. I will be traveling with our CEO to visit our projects in both Guatemala City and Antigua and while there, we will be working closely with a Guatemalan film crew that will be documenting our work. It is my res ponsibility to make sure our message is clear, the narrative is precise, and our call to action is accurate. We will only have three days to film in Guatemala, so making sure the team understands my vision for our video is essential.330 pmFinally, take that much-needed shower. 400 pmConference call with Guatemala film crew. We go over our schedule for the upcoming trip so that we make sure we utilize every moment we have together. They work for a local news team so I dont doubt that they wont be able to keep up with our hectic schedule. 530 pmStart making dinner for my husband and myself. This is one of my favorite parts of the day. I get to put my work away, listen to the news on the radio, and be creative with cooking. My husband says I am his favorite cook, so I never have to ask him what he wants ahead of time. I love surprising him with vegetable stir-fry or cauliflower buffalo wings or seitan tacos. We save a lot of money cooking at home every night too 615 pmMy husband comes home and we eat on the patio and catch up about how our work day went and other things we have going on who paid which bills and which families members we texted or talked with during our day. 700 pmWe always try to get a little exercise before the end of the day, but since we both work long hours, it is usually just a walk around the neighborhood nothing too strenuous. This is the time when we are both the least distracted and just get to chat about whatever we want. We are both so busy and need time where we arent on our phones or thinking about our next move and this is it.800 pmA quick trip to the grocery store for fresh produce. I love to focus on eating healthy, but it means going to the store multiple times during the work week. Luckily, we have three grocery stores within five minutes from our house, so it doesnt take much time to pop in and pick up a few items. 830 pmClean up the kitchen and wash our dirty dinner dishes, get tomorrow mornings coffee ready, and sit down o n the couch in the living room to watch the news. Although Children Incorporated is not an organization that has any political affiliation, what is going on in the world is relevant to our work in so many ways, so staying on top of current issues is beneficial when I am discussing with others the work that we do. 930 pmIn bed to read for a few minutes before falling asleep. I dont usually make it more than a few pages before I doze off so it takes me a long time to finish a book, but I have always been an avid reader, so I make sure I have a book on my nightstand at all times. Currently, I am reading Paul Farmers book, To Repair the World, which is a collection of speeches about global health equity and social justice. I highly recommend it. 1000 pm.Lights out. I am serious about getting eight hours of sleep. It keeps me at my best--About Children IncorporatedIn 1964, after personally witnessing the deprivation of children in Guatemala, Children Incorporateds founder, Jeanne Clarke Wood, established Children Incorporated out of her home in Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Wood began writing letters to seek assistance for the 95 children she met on her travels these children formed the first Children Incorporated project. Inclusion Deloitte US One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the f astest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
